Zac Spates of Hudson, WI, is a potter/ceramicist. He received his BA in Studio Arts (Summa Cum Laude) from Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN, in 2003. He was an assistant to Richard Bresnahan in Saint John’s Pottery from 2000-2003 and then was an apprentice at Mark Hewitt Pottery, Pittsboro, NC, from 2003-2006.
Zac fires his pottery in a wood kiln, using both deadfall from the Hudson area and scraps from sawmills. He lived in Colorado for a brief time after his apprenticeship and since then he’s been interested in combining his forms with cut vessels to resemble the rocks of those mountains. Zac’s work has been exhibited most recently at Strictly Functional Pottery National (National Juried Exhibition, Lancaster, PA, 2013); Zac Spates: Recent Works (Solo Exhibition, College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN, 2012), and Artist of the Month (Northern Clay Center, Minneapolis, MN, 2012).
