Glorious Hugs helps alleviate senior loneliness with care packages of local handmade art and poetry
New company delivers hope and joy to seniors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 10, 2015 – Dellwood, MN – With nearly half of all seniors experiencing loneliness, Glorious Hugs is a start-up Minnesota company committed to alleviating loneliness by delivering handmade art and poetry in themed care packages designed to be shared with others.
According to a 2012 University of California San Francisco study based on data from The National Institute on Aging, 43% of seniors are lonely and clinical evidence links loneliness with a 59% greater risk of reduced ability to perform activities of daily living and a 45% greater risk of death.1 With seniors living longer and 50% of caregivers also employed full-time2, caregivers are challenged to meet the medical and emotional needs of seniors.
“Minnesota leads the world in medical device technology, and yet, loneliness cannot be treated with medical devices. Until we effectively manage emotional wellness, we won’t get the clinical outcomes that technology can provide. Glorious Hugs aims to improve the medical and emotional wellness of seniors by offering family and friends a way to send an experience to share with others,” states Mary MacCarthy, CEO and Founder of Glorious Hugs LLC and a former medical device marketer with a passion for arts. “Let’s give back some of the rich Minnesota arts culture that our seniors created!”
Glorious Hugs launched in Minnesota in late April 2015 and is now expanding nationwide. Each themed care package is like “handmade art and poetry club in a box” that recipients can enjoy sharing with others through studying the handmade art, reading the commissioned poetry aloud, answering the included discussion questions on the art, poetry and memories, watching videos about the artists available online, mailing the stamped postcard, and enjoying the locally baked goods. Each themed care package contains a different form of local handmade art such as pottery, glass or acrylic painting. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and the company is proud to include work by some of the most acclaimed artists in the Twin Cities such as Guillermo Cuellar, Zac Spates, Marjorie Wade, Trish Gardiner and Linda Clayton. The care package comes in a beautiful, huggable, easy-to-open gift box with graphics designed by Erika Rae.
Care packages can be ordered individually for $49 or $59 including shipping or in a subscription. The handmade art is also available separately.
Visit Glorious Hugs at the ArtSage Midwest conference at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum on June 19, 2015 and watch the upcoming feature on the Twin Cities Live TV show.
